Today we’re going to discuss one of our existing features that has always been popular with our customer base – Auto Fallback.

What is Auto Fallback?

Auto Fallback is a feature whereby follow-up SMS and/or Voice messages are sent to a phone number should that number fail to verify after the first SMS or Voice message has been sent to it. The goal of this feature is obvious – boost conversion rates, where conversion rate is the percentage of successful verifications over the total number of SMS and Voice transactions sent out.

A user who has been sent a one-time password(OTP) may not enter it for a number of reasons. These failed conversions add up and can prove costly to companies. For example, they may have gotten distracted by another tab on their browser, may have received a phone call, or perhaps they did not receive the SMS with the OTP – this can happen sometimes believe it or not! SMS must be sent through a provider before being passed on to the phone number’s mobile carrier and during this journey, from time to time, SMS can drop and fail to deliver. If you are interested in finding out why some of your users aren’t converting, check out our new unconverted dashboard feature here.

How Should I Use Auto Fallback?

Auto Fallback can be configured to send at any time intervals and with either SMS or Voice. The two most common Auto Fallback setups we see our customers use are:

  1. SMS sent
  2. If no conversion after 30 seconds, second SMS sent through different provider
  3. If no conversion sent after another 30 seconds, third SMS sent through different provider

and

  1. SMS sent
  2. If no conversion after 30 seconds, second Voice sent through different provider
  3. If no conversion sent after another 30 seconds, third SMS sent through different provider

The main advantage of using RingCaptcha’s Auto Fallback feature is that the follow up SMS and Voice messages are sent through different providers than the first SMS or Voice message was. This ensures that if the first SMS was not delivered due to routing issues (which thankfully only happens a fraction of the time!), the next message will be sent through a different provider and hence a different route.
